Studies about wine have revealed that most Americans buy wine for immediate consumption, however there are connoisseurs who enjoy collecting bottles of wine to savor at a later date in the future. Another reason is because win becomes more and more delectable with age. This grape-fermented beverage has this enduring quality. Some wine collections are also very valuable and selling your wine collections can be a profitable enterprise.
Reasons for selling wine collection:
There are several reasons why a wine collector would want to part with his cherished collection. This can be due to his or her changing tastes or simply something entirely new one to embark on whether it is a red or white wine. The collector may already have too many bottles of wine in their collection and lack the necessary space to continue storing such amounts. Some choose to sell their wine collection because of unforeseen financial hardships. Selling wine collection is a good fall back if some extra capital is needed because after all it is sort of like a hobby and can be resumed again at a later date.
Determining the price of wine:
The price of the wine is determined by various factors.
- The number of cases made from this type of wine. The less in existence the higher the price;
- Wine coming from a single vineyard has better care so it is traditionally more expensive;
- Estate bottled wines come from the winery that grows the grapes. Therefore they are sold at higher cost;
- Location of the winery is important. French wines from Bordeaux are more valuable than from Rhone or Burgundy for example;
- The year or vintage – The older the wine, the more expensive the cost will be;
- Perception comes from the side of winery owners. The higher expenses involved in making the wine, the higher the cost associated with the wine.
Preparations before negotiating for the sales -
With a good collection, you will be able to attract a wine buyer who will appreciate buying your collection. If you make the necessary preparations, you will be able to profit from your sales equivalent to the efforts you gave in the collection and more.
- Do proper research on the current prices.
- Use a wine searcher on the internet to find the value of your wine. General searches include- 1960-Cabernet Sauvignon, Charles Krug-Vintage Select, and others. Specific searches can be too tedious and result in frustration when locating specific pricing.
- Document thoroughly the conditions of storing the wine: to include level of fill if it is high neck or only up to the shoulder, and label the condition if it is perfect, torn, moldy, etc.
- Include in your document: note levels and types of sediments as none, light silty, moderate, crusty, etc. Add this info to your document for showing – fill, label and sediment.
Where to sell wine collection:
After completely documenting your wine, you are now ready to take, fax or email your list to-
- Approach a commercial wine reseller directly. Be specific and clear on the advantage of buying your wine and make a good negotiation for the price based on your research;
- Sell online to commercial resellers of old wine by looking for addresses found in the classified section of any issue of the Wine Spectator;
- Contact auction houses which are likely to overestimate your wine collection so that you will be happy to auction your wine (although at an eventual lower price). An auction site is one option to find a wine buyer but it will bring the amount you should expect.
- If you need to sell wine collection immediately, selling it online via auction is probably another alternative. But you have to understand the auction process: wait for bidders to bid, rebid items that didn’t sell and package and ship bottles by yourself.
- Another way that the Internet helps to sell wine is to do a Google or Yahoo! search and look for Wine Buyers. This will bring you to a list of potential wine buyers in the market. The first page of the list contains the most promising ones. The process is quick, simple and fair.
Wine sellers may choose to sell their wine collection by going in person to deal with commercial sellers or at regular auctions. They can also do the same online or get targeted results on the Internet using Google and Yahoo search. Since you have documented all the information about your wine, and you know how much they are worth, you now know how to sell wine collection without getting taken advantage of or finding the process becoming too overly stressful.
